Bawaseer (Piles): Diet, Desi Herbs and Simple Care That Brings Relief

Triphala powder by Maqsood Herbal

Bawaseer (بواسیر), or piles, is a very common but rarely discussed problem. Many people suffer quietly out of shyness. Piles are swollen veins around the back passage, and they often cause pain, itching or bleeding during toilet. The good news is that simple changes in diet and habits help most people a lot.

Types of bawaseer

  • Khooni bawaseer (bleeding piles): bright red blood on the tissue or in the toilet.
  • Badi bawaseer (non bleeding piles): swelling, itching and discomfort without much bleeding.

What causes piles?

  • Long term qabz and straining in the toilet (the biggest cause)
  • Low fibre diet and not enough water
  • Sitting for long hours, including long time on the phone in the toilet
  • Pregnancy and heavy lifting

The most important step: soft stool

Almost all piles care starts with making the stool soft so you do not strain. Read our qabz guide for full details.

Herbs traditionally used

1. Isabgol (اسبغول)

Isabgol softens stool and is the most common daily support for people with piles. Take it with a full glass of water.

2. Triphala (تری پھلا)

Triphala at night with warm water is traditionally used for regular, easy bowel movements.

3. Harar (ہرڑ) / Myrobalan

Harar is a classic Unani herb for digestion and the bowel. It is often used in murabba form (Harar murabba) or as part of Triphala.

4. Anjeer and Aloo Bukhara

Soaked figs and prunes are gentle, natural and tasty ways to add fibre.

Simple home care

  1. Warm sitz bath: sit in a tub of warm (not hot) water for 10 to 15 minutes, two to three times a day. This is soothing for pain and itching.
  2. Do not strain: go when you feel the urge and do not sit for long.
  3. Use a small stool (patri) under your feet on a western toilet so your knees are higher than your hips.
  4. Keep the area clean and dry. Use water rather than rough tissue.

Foods that help and foods to avoid

Eat more: daal, vegetables, salad, papaya, guava, whole wheat roti, oats, yogurt and 8 to 10 glasses of water.

Reduce: very spicy food, too much red chilli, maida, fried food, processed meat and too much tea.

When to see a doctor

Bleeding from the back passage should always be checked by a doctor at least once, because other conditions can also cause bleeding. See a doctor urgently if bleeding is heavy, if blood is dark or mixed in stool, if there is severe pain, or if you notice weight loss or a change in bowel habits, especially after age 40.

Frequently asked questions
