Shatavari, Methi and Saunf: Traditional Herbs for Women’s Wellness

Shatavari (satawar) by Maqsood Herbal

From monthly comfort to energy and strength, women in Pakistan have trusted certain herbs for generations. This guide explains the most common ones in simple words, along with safety points every woman should know.

1. Shatavari (ستاور) / Satawar

Asparagus racemosus is one of the best known herbs for women in South Asian tradition. It is traditionally used as a general tonic for strength and wellbeing. It is usually taken as a powder with warm milk.

2. Methi Dana (میتھی دانہ) / Fenugreek seeds

Methi is a kitchen staple and is traditionally used by new mothers in desi homes. Soaked methi seeds or methi water in the morning is a common habit. It has a strong taste, so start with a small amount.

3. Saunf (سونف) / Fennel

Saunf qehwa is a gentle, warm drink that many women take for bloating and monthly discomfort. Boil one teaspoon in a cup of water for 5 minutes.

4. Kalonji (کلونجی)

Kalonji with honey is a popular Tibb-e-Nabwi habit for general wellness in the family.

5. Dates (کھجور) and Makhana

Dates give quick energy and iron, and makhana (fox nuts) are a light, healthy snack. Both are good additions to a woman’s daily diet.

Very important safety points

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: do not use any herb without your doctor’s advice
  • For irregular periods, heavy bleeding or severe pain, please see a lady doctor
  • Anaemia (weakness, pale skin) is very common in Pakistani women. Get your blood checked and eat iron rich food

Daily habits for women’s health

  1. Eat iron rich foods: daal, green vegetables, dates, eggs
  2. Drink enough water
  3. Walk or do light exercise daily
  4. Get regular check ups

How to use these herbs in daily life

  • Shatavari: half a teaspoon of powder in a cup of warm milk at night. Start with a small amount.
  • Methi dana: soak one teaspoon overnight and drink the water in the morning, or add methi to sabzi and paratha.
  • Saunf: chew a pinch after meals or make saunf qehwa in the evening.
  • Kalonji: a few seeds with a spoon of honey in the morning, or sprinkled on roti and salads.
  • Dates: 2 to 3 dates a day as a healthy snack, especially during Ramadan and winter.

Weakness and anaemia: a very common problem

Many women in Pakistan feel tired, dizzy or short of breath because of low iron (anaemia). Herbs cannot replace iron treatment. Get a simple blood test (CBC) if you feel weak all the time, and eat iron rich foods like daal, chana, spinach, eggs, meat and dates. Have them with lemon or other vitamin C foods to help iron absorption, and avoid tea right after meals.

How to check the quality of these herbs

Shatavari roots should be clean and cream coloured. Methi seeds should be golden yellow and hard, with a strong smell. Saunf should be green, fresh and fragrant. Kalonji seeds should be jet black and oily when crushed. Old or dusty stock loses its smell and quality.
