Sugar (شوگر), or diabetes, is now one of the biggest health problems in Pakistan. Millions of people live with it, and many more do not yet know they have it. Alongside medicine, diet and exercise, many families use traditional herbs that have been part of desi homes for generations.
The most important rule in this guide: never stop or reduce your diabetes medicine or insulin on your own. Herbs can be used alongside treatment only with your doctor’s knowledge, because some of them can lower sugar further and cause a dangerous low.
Signs of high sugar you should not ignore
- Feeling very thirsty and passing urine often, especially at night
- Tiredness, blurred vision and slow healing wounds
- Unexplained weight loss
- Tingling or numbness in the feet
If you notice these, get a simple blood sugar test (fasting sugar or HbA1c). Early diagnosis protects your eyes, kidneys, heart and feet.
Herbs traditionally used alongside diabetes care
1. Jamun ki guthli (جامن کی گٹھلی) / Jamun seeds
Dried and powdered jamun seeds are one of the best known desi traditions for people with sugar. A small amount of the powder is commonly taken with water. The fruit itself is also enjoyed in season.
2. Karela (کریلا) / Bitter gourd
Karela is eaten as a sabzi in almost every home, and karela juice is a well known traditional drink. Its strong bitter taste is part of its reputation. Karela juice should be taken in small amounts, and people on sugar medicine should monitor their levels.
3. Methi Dana (میتھی دانہ) / Fenugreek seeds
Soaked methi seeds or methi water in the morning is a popular habit. Methi is also rich in fibre, which slows down how quickly food turns into sugar.
4. Darchini (دار چینی) / Cinnamon
A pinch of darchini in qehwa or oats is a tasty, traditional addition. Use normal kitchen amounts, not large doses.
5. Neem (نیم)
Neem leaves are traditionally used in desi nuskhay for sugar, usually in small amounts. Neem is strong and bitter and is not for long term use without guidance.
A simple desi diet plan for better sugar control
- Breakfast: an egg or two, one whole wheat roti or a bowl of daliya, and tea without sugar.
- Mid morning: a guava, apple or a handful of roasted chana.
- Lunch: half the plate vegetables, a quarter daal or chicken, a quarter roti or brown rice.
- Evening: green tea or darchini qehwa with a few almonds.
- Dinner: light and early, at least 2 to 3 hours before sleep.
Foods to limit
Sugar, mithai, soft drinks, packaged juices, white rice in large amounts, maida, and fried snacks like samosa and pakora. Fruits are healthy but eat them whole, not as juice, and in normal portions.
Daily habits that help most
- Walk for 30 minutes daily, or 10 minutes after each meal
- Check your sugar regularly and keep a record
- Look after your feet: check them daily and never walk barefoot
- Get your eyes and kidneys checked once a year
- Sleep well and manage stress
Warning: low sugar (hypoglycaemia)
If you take medicine or insulin and also use herbs, sugar can drop too low. Signs include shaking, sweating, sudden hunger, confusion and a fast heartbeat. Take a glucose drink or sugar immediately and contact your doctor.
Common myths
- Myth: “Herbs can replace insulin.” Fact: this is dangerous. Never stop insulin or medicine.
- Myth: “People with diabetes can eat unlimited fruit.” Fact: fruit contains natural sugar. Portions matter.
- Myth: “Only sweet food raises sugar.” Fact: roti, rice, naan and potatoes also raise sugar.
