Tiredness, low energy and stress are common complaints among men today, whether they are students, office workers or labourers. In Unani Tibb and desi tradition, a few herbs have long been used to support strength and stamina. Here is an honest, simple guide to the three most popular ones.
Our honest note: No herb works like a magic pill. Be careful of any product that promises instant results. Real energy comes from good sleep, healthy food, exercise and less stress. Herbs can support that routine.
1. Ashwagandha (اسگند ناگوری) / Asgand Nagori
Withania somnifera is one of the most researched traditional herbs in South Asia. It is known as an “adaptogen”, meaning it is traditionally used to help the body cope with stress and tiredness. The root is commonly taken as a powder (half to one teaspoon) with warm milk at night.
- Commonly used for: stress, tiredness, general strength
- Avoid if: you are pregnant, have thyroid disease or take sleeping or thyroid medicine, unless your doctor agrees
2. Salab Misri (سالب مصری)
Salab Misri comes from the tubers of orchid plants and is a famous item in Unani nuskhay. It is traditionally taken as a fine powder with milk, often in winter. Because genuine Salab Misri is expensive, fake or mixed products are common in the market, so buy from a trusted pansar.
3. Musli Safed (موصلی سفید)
Chlorophytum borivilianum is a white root used in many desi strength formulas. It is usually taken as a powder with milk and is often combined with Ashwagandha in traditional nuskhay.
How people commonly use them
- Start with one herb, not three at once
- Take a small dose (half a teaspoon) with warm milk at night
- Use regularly for a few weeks and notice how you feel
- Stop if you feel any discomfort
Lifestyle comes first
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours
- Walk or exercise daily
- Eat eggs, daal, milk, dry fruits and fresh vegetables
- Cut down on smoking, sugary drinks and late nights
Who should talk to a doctor first
If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid problems or take regular medicine, please consult your doctor before using any strength herbs.
How to check quality before you buy
- Ashwagandha: the roots should be pale beige, dry and snap cleanly. The powder has a strong, earthy smell, often described as horse like, which is where the name comes from.
- Salab Misri: genuine pieces are hard, slightly translucent and expensive. Soft, white, chalky pieces sold very cheaply are often fake.
- Musli Safed: should be clean, white to cream coloured and free from fungus or a musty smell.
A simple daily routine for better energy
- Morning: wake up at a fixed time and get 10 minutes of sunlight.
- Breakfast: eggs, milk or yogurt, and a handful of dry fruits.
- Afternoon: a proper lunch with daal or meat and vegetables. Avoid energy drinks.
- Evening: 30 minutes of walking, cycling or exercise.
- Night: if you use a herb, take it with warm milk and go to bed before midnight. Keep your phone away for 30 minutes before sleep.
Common myths
- Myth: “More herbs mean faster results.” Fact: taking many herbs together or in large doses can upset the stomach and cause other problems.
- Myth: “Herbal means no side effects.” Fact: herbs can interact with medicines, especially for blood pressure, sugar and thyroid.
- Myth: “Instant results are a sign of a good product.” Fact: products promising instant effects are sometimes mixed with hidden medicines. Buy only from trusted sellers.
Food that supports strength
Traditional Pakistani diets already include many helpful foods: desi ghee in moderation, milk, eggs, daal, dates, almonds, walnuts, magaz and seasonal fruits. Winter panjeeri with dry fruits is a well loved example.
