Hair Fall: Reetha, Shikakai, Amla and Desi Oils for Stronger Hair

Reetha (soapnut) powder for hair care

Hair fall (بالوں کا گرنا) is one of the most searched health topics in Pakistan, for both men and women. Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. If you notice much more, thin patches or a wider parting, it is worth looking at the cause and giving your hair better care.

Common causes of hair fall

  • Low iron, vitamin D or protein in the diet
  • Stress, illness or a big change in weight
  • Thyroid problems and hormonal changes, including after pregnancy
  • Dandruff and an unclean scalp
  • Harsh shampoos, hair colour, straighteners and tight hairstyles
  • Family history (genetic hair loss)

Desi herbs for hair care

1. Reetha (ریٹھا) / Soapnut

Reetha makes a natural lather and has been used to wash hair for generations. It cleans without stripping all the natural oil.

2. Shikakai (سیکاکائی)

Shikakai is a gentle natural cleanser, usually mixed with Reetha and Amla for a traditional herbal hair wash.

3. Amla (آملہ)

Amla powder is used in hair packs and in hair oils, and amla is also eaten for its vitamin C.

4. Methi Dana (میتھی دانہ)

A paste of soaked methi seeds is a popular hair mask. Apply for 30 minutes and wash well.

5. Mehndi (مہندی) / Henna

Pure mehndi conditions hair and gives natural colour. Use only pure henna without chemical “black” dyes, which can cause allergies.

How to make a herbal hair wash

  1. Soak 5 to 6 Reetha, 5 to 6 Shikakai pods and 1 tablespoon of Amla overnight in 2 cups of water.
  2. Boil the mixture for 10 minutes in the morning and let it cool.
  3. Strain and use the liquid to wash your hair instead of shampoo.
  4. Keep it away from your eyes, as Reetha can sting.

Hair oils: which one to choose?

  • Coconut oil: light and good for most hair types.
  • Amla oil: a traditional favourite for hair care.
  • Kalonji oil: commonly used for the scalp, often mixed with coconut oil.
  • Castor oil (arand): thick, usually mixed with a lighter oil.

Warm the oil slightly, massage the scalp gently for 5 minutes and leave for 1 to 2 hours or overnight, twice a week. See our Herbal Oils.

A simple weekly hair routine

  1. Oil massage twice a week
  2. Herbal wash 2 to 3 times a week
  3. A hair pack (methi or amla) once a week
  4. Avoid hot tools and tight ponytails
  5. Eat eggs, daal, green vegetables and dates, and drink enough water
