Chaiyan (چھائیاں) and daagh (داغ), dark patches and spots on the face, are a common worry, especially with Pakistan’s strong sun. Our mothers and grandmothers used simple kitchen and pansar ingredients to care for their skin. These natural face packs are gentle, cheap and easy to make at home.
What causes chaiyan and dark spots?
- Sun exposure without protection
- Hormonal changes, including pregnancy
- Old acne marks
- Lack of sleep and stress
- Harsh products and bleach creams
Before you start: do a patch test
Apply a little of any face pack on the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours. If you see redness or itching, do not use it on your face. Natural does not always mean suitable for every skin.
5 desi face packs
1. Multani Mitti and rose water (for oily skin)
Mix 1 tablespoon of Multani Mitti (ملتانی مٹی) with enough Arq-e-Gulab (rose water) to make a smooth paste. Apply for 10 minutes, then wash with normal water. Use twice a week. Multani Mitti is traditionally used to absorb extra oil.
2. Haldi, besan and yogurt (for dull skin)
Mix a pinch of Haldi (ہلدی), 1 tablespoon of besan and 1 tablespoon of yogurt. Leave for 15 minutes. This is a classic ubtan style pack used before weddings for a fresh glow. Use only a pinch of haldi to avoid a yellow tint.
3. Sandal powder and milk (for tired skin)
Sandal (صندل) powder mixed with raw milk makes a cooling pack, loved in summer. Apply for 15 minutes and rinse.
4. Orange peel powder and honey
Dried orange peel powder with a few drops of pure honey is traditionally used to brighten dull skin. Apply for 10 minutes, then rinse gently.
5. Neem powder (for skin prone to pimples)
Neem (نیم) powder mixed with rose water is a traditional choice for skin that gets pimples. Keep it on for 10 minutes only.
Habits that protect your skin
- Use sunscreen every day, even in winter
- Do not pick at pimples
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours and drink enough water
- Avoid bleach and unknown whitening creams, which can damage skin
When to see a dermatologist
If patches spread quickly, itch, bleed or do not improve after a few months, please see a skin specialist.
Choose the right pack for your skin type
- Oily skin: Multani Mitti with rose water, or Neem powder packs. Use twice a week.
- Dry skin: besan, yogurt and honey packs. Avoid Multani Mitti or add milk to it.
- Sensitive skin: Sandal and milk, or plain yogurt. Always patch test first.
- Combination skin: Multani Mitti on the T zone (forehead, nose, chin) and a milder pack on the cheeks.
A simple weekly skin routine
- Every morning: wash your face with a mild face wash, then apply sunscreen. This is the single most important step for chaiyan.
- Every night: wash off dust and make up, and apply a light moisturiser.
- Twice a week: one of the face packs above, suited to your skin type.
- Once a week: a gentle scrub with besan and a little milk. Do not scrub hard.
How to check pure Multani Mitti and Sandal
Good Multani Mitti is smooth, cream to light brown in colour and has an earthy smell. It should dissolve evenly in water without grit or sand. Real Sandal powder has a mild, sweet woody smell. A very strong perfume smell can mean added fragrance.
Myths about chaiyan and spots
- Myth: “Lemon juice directly on the face removes spots.” Fact: undiluted lemon can irritate and even darken skin in the sun.
- Myth: “Bleach creams are safe for daily use.” Fact: many unlabelled whitening creams contain harmful ingredients. Avoid them.
- Myth: “Sunscreen is only for summer.” Fact: the Pakistani sun is strong all year, even on cloudy days.
Food for healthy skin
Eat fresh fruit, especially amla, oranges and guava for vitamin C, plus nuts, seeds and plenty of water. Cut down on sugary drinks and very oily food.
Frequently asked questions
How often can I use Multani Mitti?
Twice a week is enough for most people. People with dry skin should use it less often or add a little milk or honey.
Will these packs remove chaiyan completely?
Natural packs are traditionally used to support clearer, brighter skin. Deep pigmentation often needs a dermatologist. Daily sunscreen is the most important step.
Can I leave a face pack overnight?
No. Most packs should stay on for 10 to 15 minutes only.
